Backing Up My Horse= Please HELP!

TrailRidingGirl's picture

I have owned a 14 year old mare for about 5 months now. When I try to back her up she will not. She Stands there. This has become a problem because she will run you over and not back up.. she will run into you to get food and will not back up. Now when I try to use a halter and leadrope to back her up (saying back and tapping her chest with the lead rope) she does not move.. She is good at other stuff. She backs up when I am in the saddle. She is a big horse and I am only 5'1 and 85 pounds. I feel like she could hurt me someday. Please Help me solve this problem.

Please direct any one you think would be interested or let me know about any good sites to post this ad on, that would help me fill this position by summer. ( This is a great job for a young (18-22) person that wants to make a career with horses.)

I would also love to hear your coments on how you pay, and use intern help.

Lets all turn out some good horses and young people this year.

thanks

What makes a horse tick?

Judy's picture
This week-end at the barn we were chatting about the horse's eyes and how he can see straight forward and backward at the same time.  Someone said that the horse has the largest eyes of any land animal!!!  Now we are wondering what the strongest bone is of a horse.  Does anyone know?

what's the best way to tell client that horse is not right for them?

horselvr's picture

I have a new client who is a very "nervous" person She has a 4 yr geld she has brought for me to train and it's hard to assess if the horse's nervousness stems from being around her or he is just naturally nervous himself. In either case it seems to me that this just isn't going to work out but who knows I may be wrong. How long should I wait before I let her know this may not be a good match or should I give it more time to see if things could work out?

Any advice on boots

hieu's picture

Hi,
Do you have any advice on buying boots? I do pleasure riding and some work on the barn. What are the appropriate boots, and where can I get some good deals? I live in Santa Barbara, and if you know some good places in the area to recommend, it would be swell.
Adios
